Variation of the apparent strains for nano-Ni as a function of temperature at atmospheric pressure. The plotted apparent strains include both the surface strains of Ni nanocrystals and instrument contribution. The plot shows that the Ni crystals reach a stress-free state at 1,023–1,073 K, making it graphically simple to subtract the instrumental base line, which is 0.4–0.5 × 10−2 for the DER2 corrected data, and therefore used to determine the surface strains in Ni nanocrystals. The plot also reveals similar thermo-mechanics behaviors as observed at high pressures (Fig. 9)
